Virginia's Early Intervention Reading Initiative was established in 1997 by the Virginia legislature and is coordinated by the Virginia Department of Education.  The Initiative seeks to identify and reduce the number of children with reading problems through instruction of early literacy skills.

Intervention ends May 1, 2009.  Screening for all kindergarteners, first and second graders will begin Monday, May 4th.  Any student who does not meet their spring benchmark and is identified to receive additional services either from a PALS Support Staff Member or Resource Reading Specialist for the 2009-2010 school year will receive a letter by June 4th.

All students should continue reading over the summer to improve their literacy skills.  Remember to study your sight words too!  Upcoming second graders should be doing some writing activities including an interesting topic sentence with supporting sentences giving details and descriptions.  Have a great Summer!  See you in the Fall!!
